I have just been given a Calathea ornata as a gift. Does anyone here have any advice on caring for it?

It's easy, just ensure you have well-draining soil, it will do great in partial sun or indirect sunlight and If you want to propagate it, I advise you to find it's much easier to do so with root division than by growing it from seed 👍

This plant will be happy in bright, indirect light. Make sure you give it regular watering, and you might also want to do a finger test on the soil's surface a few inches deep. If you're going to get technical, you can use a humidity meter and make sure the temperature is around 65-80°F. Make sure you give it a potting mix with good drainage. It'll also love some fertilizer during the growing season. I think the best thing you can do is use liquid fertilizer.

I absolutely love this plant! I always use a soil mix with great drainage when I'm re-potting it. My mixture is two parts peat moss, one part pelite, or orchids bark, and one part coco coir. After having my plant for three years, it's so versatile. It doesn't mind humidity at all, and I've never experienced it being affected by pests.
